Originally part of a Crown Grant taken up by Thomas Henry, a baker, Auckland hotelier Patrick Darby purchased part of the site in 1861. It was a proposed inn located on the prominent corner site at the intersection of Auckland’s Karangahape Road (more commonly known as K’road) and Pitt Street. The site was first licensed to George Pearson as the Naval Hotel in 1862.

The Georgian-style timber public house was the first licensed premises to be established on Karangahape Road. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1894. Subsequently, the present large brick establishment was built on the same site.

Rebuilt during the year ending February 1896, the current Naval and Family Hotel was erected in a highly decorative style characteristic of the late-Victorian era. The Naval and Family Hotel holds architectural significance as an example of a late-Victorian corner hotel and represents the work of prolific Auckland architect Arthur Wilson. Its strong visual qualities stem from its ornate exterior and corner location within the Karangahape Road streetscape, making it a local landmark. Furthermore, the Naval and Family Hotel has historical significance as a licensed premises building that has been in continuous use for more than a century, serving as a hostelry for nearly 150 years.

Our Mission

We strive to provide an exceptional and immersive experience for our patrons, and we intend to keep this beautiful site as an important part of Auckland’s history and a key component of K Road’s streetscape for many years to come. We will continue the long tradition of using the site as a significant place for gathering and interaction.
